The short version
DoubleTake is a series of Idea Mill LLC. Subtitle display, transcripts, romaji, vocabulary, screenshots, offline dictionaries, and Anki export are handled in your browser. DoubleTake's servers are used for sign-in, subscription access, and billing; they do not receive your subtitles, transcripts, selected words, saved vocabulary, screenshots, or offline dictionaries. The extension sends a small set of content-free interaction events for the rating and feedback prompt, as described below. It does not send subtitles, transcripts, selected words, saved vocabulary, screenshots, offline dictionaries, page URLs, or viewing activity for analytics. Optional subtitle and dictionary features contact their providers directly, as described below.
Data stored in your browser
DoubleTake stores settings and study data in Chrome storage and IndexedDB. This includes display preferences, enabled sites, subtitle choices and timing, saved vocabulary, imported offline dictionaries, screenshots, Anki export settings, and any Jimaku API key you provide. Some preferences may sync through Chrome if browser sync is enabled; the Jimaku key remains in local extension storage. Fetched subtitles may be cached locally so they can be reused without another search. The extension removes cached subtitle entries older than 30 days when the cache is opened. Screenshots are captured only when you ask, and Anki files are generated locally. You can clear local data through DoubleTake, Chrome's extension controls, or by uninstalling the extension.
Requests made by the extension
DoubleTake accesses the current video page and its subtitle resources only to provide the features you use. Netflix, Crunchyroll, Prime Video, and their content-delivery networks continue to handle their own video and subtitle requests. If you use subtitle search, your search and file requests—and your API key, if required—go directly to Jimaku. If you use an online dictionary, the selected Japanese text goes directly to Jisho or Jotoba. If you install an offline dictionary, your browser fetches that dataset directly from its source: GitHub release hosts provide Jitendex, KANJIDIC2, KanjiVG, and JMnedict, while api.jiten.moe provides the separate optional Jiten frequency dataset. Dictionary settings identify each dataset and link to its source and licence. These providers may receive standard request data such as your IP address and the requested resource. DoubleTake does not proxy or store these requests on its servers.
Accounts and billing
When you sign in, DoubleTake processes your email or account identifier, authentication token, and subscription status. The token is also stored locally in the extension so you can stay signed in. Stripe processes payments. DoubleTake does not store your full card number, but DoubleTake and Stripe may retain customer identifiers, subscription status, transaction records, and other billing information needed to run the subscription, prevent fraud, meet legal obligations, and provide support.
Website and support
If you join the waitlist, DoubleTake stores your email address so we can notify you about launch. You can ask us to remove it at any time. The public website may use PostHog to measure page views and interactions. PostHog and our hosting provider may receive technical data such as your IP address, browser type, page URL, referral information, and timestamps. The extension does not load PostHog in your browser. When the post-video rating prompt appears, it sends fixed events to DoubleTake's API for the prompt being shown, your Yes or No choice, and whether you choose the review or feedback route. After submitted feedback is accepted for email delivery, the API records a successful-submission event. DoubleTake's API sends only the event name, fixed event labels (including Yes or No when applicable), and your authenticated account identifier to PostHog. Feedback text, page URLs, viewing activity, and language-learning content are not included. If you submit feedback through the extension, DoubleTake sends your message and signed-in account email through Cloudflare Email Service to our verified support mailbox. Your account email is used as the Reply-To address so we can respond. Raw feedback is not stored in DoubleTake's database; it remains in the support mailbox until the conversation is resolved or the message is deleted under support or legal needs. Do not include passwords, payment details, tokens, or sensitive personal information. If you contact support by email, we receive the information you include and use it to respond.
Use and sharing
We use data only to operate, secure, support, and improve DoubleTake, manage accounts and subscriptions, comply with law, and prevent abuse. We do not sell personal information or use extension learning data for advertising. We share data only with the service providers described in this policy when needed to provide their services, when required by law, to protect DoubleTake or its users, or as part of a business transfer. Third-party services handle data under their own policies.
Your choices
You can clear local extension data, remove installed dictionaries, delete saved vocabulary, sign out, cancel your subscription, or uninstall DoubleTake. Contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information held by DoubleTake. Billing and legal records may be retained where required.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
DoubleTake's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Security, children, and changes
We use reasonable safeguards and encrypted connections where data leaves the browser. No system is completely secure. DoubleTake is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. We may update this policy as DoubleTake changes. We will update the effective date and provide additional notice when appropriate.
