Try the transcript, vocabulary, and subtitle panels below — this is the real app.

How it works

Your watch session is the study session

No separate app, no homework tab. Everything happens right on the video you're already watching.

  1. Press play

Open any title on Netflix or Crunchyroll and watch the way you already do.

  2. Read along, live

Dual Japanese and English subtitles render straight over the player, synced to every line.

  3. Look up any word

Click a word in the subtitle or transcript to see its reading and meaning, instantly.

  4. Save it as a flashcard

Keep a single word or the whole line — with its sentence, reading, and timestamp — in one click.

  5. Export to Anki

Send your saved cards to Anki and review them on your own schedule.

Where it works

Works almost anywhere you watch

Netflix and Crunchyroll get first-class, hand-tuned support — and DoubleTake renders dual subtitles over virtually any other site with a standard HTML5 player.

First-class support

NetflixCrunchyroll

Most of the web, too

Any standard HTML5 player

If a site plays video in a standard HTML5 player, DoubleTake can usually render subtitles right over it — no downloads, no separate app. Not every site is guaranteed, but most just work.

Reliability

It finds the subtitles. Every episode.

The thing that kills immersion tools is missing subtitles. DoubleTake has three ways to never leave you stuck.

Reads the native track

Detects the player and uses the site's own Japanese subtitles the moment you hit play.

Auto-fetches when there's none

No Japanese track on the show? DoubleTake pulls matching subtitles and syncs them for you.

Takes your own file

Got a perfect .srt? Drop it in and keep watching. The manual escape hatch always works.

Smart caching stores fetched subtitles locally, so repeat episodes load instantly.

Romaji is generated on-device with kuroshiro + kuromoji — accurate readings, no server round-trip.

From watching to remembering

Turn any line into a flashcard

See a word worth keeping? Capture it with the exact sentence it came from, then send it to Anki and let spaced repetition do the rest.

On the video

Koko kara saki wa ore ni makasero

Leave the rest to me.

One-click capture

Save a single word or the whole subtitle line without leaving the video.

Full context

Every card keeps its sentence, reading, meaning, and the episode and timestamp it came from.

Your deck, your rules

FAQ

Everything you need before you install

Quick answers so you can install with confidence.

Which sites does it work on?

DoubleTake has first-class support for Netflix and Crunchyroll, and it also works on most of the web through the standard HTML5 video player.

Do I need Japanese subtitles on the show already?

No. DoubleTake uses the site's native track when there is one. When there isn't one, you can search a connected subtitle library and load the correct subtitles for the show.

What Japanese level is this for?

Any level. Start with Japanese, Romaji, and English all on, then hide lines one at a time as your listening improves. The controls are per-line.

I'm on my phone — how do I install?

DoubleTake is a desktop Chrome extension, so installing happens on a computer. Copy the link to yourself and open it on your desktop browser to add it.

Does it collect my data?

Subtitle processing and Romaji conversion happen locally in your browser. Core features make no cloud calls and your viewing never leaves your machine.
